FIRST SUBANG JAYA INTER-COURT BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT 2003
THE DATO' LEE HWA BENG CHALLENGE CUP

Dato Lee Hwa Beng Cup   USJ12 vs USJ20   The USJ12 Basketball Team

No where else in Malaysia can you find so many basketball courts concentrated in one area. When the last court in USJ was completed in USJ 4 early this year, it was the 19th court  in the Subang Jaya constituency. This is not counting at least 4 schools, some colleges and  private premises who have built their own courts. If there is none in that precinct,  either there is no suitable land to build one or they just missed the boat to utilise last year’s budget. The idea to conduct an inter court basketball tournament based on a home and away match was mooted by Dato' Lee Hwa Beng, the ADUN for Subang Jaya who has became synonymous with basketball in our community. He said this is the biggest way to get the community involve in sporting activity where residents can interact throughout the year. This year we have 16 teams participating and all the teams are from the Subang Jaya constituency unlike last year where there were "outsiders" when 10 teams were fielded. Two of the 13 precincts  fielded two teams to cater for the abundance of good players in their precincts.

The tournament this year is very well organised and managed due to better funding and thanks to Dato' Lee who "roped in" a generous sponsor. Beside the cost of hiring MABA referees,  each participating team was also given a RM 500 subsidy to manage the team. Many find the amount insufficient as we have to take care of the jerseys, provide the balls and the home team must provide food and drinks to their opponents. Thus, all the teams somehow found their own sponsors to bridge the gap. This also includes the generous local residents who actually provided food and drinks not only to the players but also the supporters as well. The participating team also benefited when they are given training on how to keep score and time. It is a sight to see a small boy hardly tall enough to write on the white board capable of keeping score!

As basketball is closely associated with the Chinese, the organiser insisted that the team must also comprise of at least 30% non-Chinese.  In the case of USJ 1, more than half the team players are non-Chinese. At venues where matches are being played, we can see the community coming out in full force to cheer the players irrespective of their  races. Though the minimum age is 16 with no maximum, more than 80% are  either school or college students. Thus, it is very common to hear these young boys playing along side their elders screaming “Uncle, uncle, please pass the ball here.” I was stunned when I heard it for the first time. At the rate we are progressing, it will be no wonder when the day most of our great national players come from Subang Jaya.

Since Subang Jaya is very IT savvy,  we even set up an eGroup and a website  as a communication channel to bring the score home to the residents as they do not get to read the results in the regular press.  In this site, we would trade strategies and comments on the games played.  We even have regular monthly meeting well attended by team managers and coaches to discuss how we can make the tournament better or more exciting.  We even iron out our differences at the table rather than on the court bearing in mind that we are playing in the presence of our community.  "IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT WINNING, IT’S ALL ABOUT HOW YOU PLAY THE GAME"
